In a recent announcement they are now restricting &#8220;32-bit kdb+ for non-commercial use only&#8221;. The timing is particularly unfortunate as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timestored.com\/time-series-data\/column-oriented-databases\">column oriented databases<\/a> are becoming available.<\/li>\n<li>One of those databases: <a href=\"http:\/\/pivotal.io\/big-data\/press-release\/pivotal-introduces-first-open-source-enterprise-grade-big-data-product-suite\">Greenplum just announced that it is going open source<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Alternative (far less enterprise proven) solutions are available:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MAN AHL have released <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/manahl\/arctic\">Arctic<\/a> an open source Market Data platform based on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/PyData\/python-and-mongo-db-as-a-market-data-platform-by-james-blackburn\">python and MongoDB<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timestored.com\/time-series-data\/kerf-database\">Kerf Database<\/a> &#8211; A DB aimed at the same market as kdb has now partnered with Briarcliff-Hall and is making greater sales inroads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This renewed interest in kdb alternatives hasn&#8217;t so far delivered a kdb+ killer but I fear in time it will.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Previously on our blog we had a lively debate about a possibly Open Sourced kdb+ , unfortunately kx now seems to be moving the opposite direction.
