UI Engineer (React) – Contract → Permanent
Remote • Any timezone • Work directly with the founder on Pulse
Timestored is a small, focused startup that has been building data analysis software for 13 years. Our new product Pulse – a real-time, finance-grade internal UI platform – has taken off, and we’re looking for a React UI Engineer to help us accelerate.
This role is ideal for someone who loves building polished, high-performance data UIs, prefers autonomy, and enjoys working closely with a technical founder on a product with proven traction.
Role Details
Title: UI Engineer (React)
Engagement: One month paid trial with extended contract agreed to suit both parties, with conversion to permanent an option.
You will:
- Build and improve Pulse’s React UI and real-time data components.
- Work directly with the founder to agree roadmaps and priorities.
- Contribute to a mix of feature development and UI/UX improvements.
- Take ownership of tasks — from spec → design → implementation.
- Help improve performance to reach smooth 25 FPS rendering where needed.
- Contribute to a product used by quants, analysts, and engineering teams in finance.
You can work independently (spec your own features) or collaboratively (daily check-ins, guidance, and clear task breakdowns). We can support as much autonomy as you want: if you can independently spec and build work, great; if you prefer clear direction and feedback, we can meet and answer questions every day.
Tech Stack
You should be confident with:
- React + TypeScript (essential).
- High-performance frontend engineering for data-heavy interfaces.
- Git, npm and modern JavaScript tooling.
Nice to have / easy to learn on the job:
- SlickGrid.
- BlueprintJS.
- SQL and DuckDB.
- WebSockets.
- jQuery (for small legacy areas only).
- Benchmarking, profiling, and performance tuning in the browser.
Backend knowledge is not required, but if you want to learn Micronaut / Java, there will be some opportunities.
We use cutting edge tools, encourage using AI for all your work, and give you freedom to decide which tools to use where it makes sense.
Example Work
There are around 135 open issues on our public GitHub repository for the Pulse UI (plus additional items in our internal tracker). These give a clear idea of the tasks involved in improving the UI.
Representative tasks include:
- Adding grouping and aggregations to our table/grid component.
- Improving chart interactions and rendering pipelines.
- Enhancing real-time components to handle thousands of updates per second.
- UX/UI improvements to complex, data-dense screens.
- Extending our SQL editor and charting views.
- Fixing layout, styling and responsiveness issues.
- Designing clean, intuitive controls for data-heavy workflows.
- Upgrading the core NPM packages
If you like polishing details, building fast data tools, and shaping product direction, you will enjoy this work.
What We're Looking For
- Strong experience with React + TypeScript.
- Proven experience designing good-looking, intuitive UIs for data-intensive applications (dashboards, trading tools, analytics, internal tools, etc.).
- Comfortable working in a small, fast-moving environment.
- Product-minded, self-directed, and pragmatic.
- Strong interest in data tools, dashboards, or financial / real-time applications.
- Happy to take responsibility for the quality of what you ship.
- Good written English for async communication.
- Willingness to work with SQL where needed (assistance will be provided).
Logistics & Benefits
- Location: Fully remote. Any timezone.
- Hours: Fully flexible. You choose your working hours.
- Engagement: Contract, with the expectation of invoicing mid to long term.
- Compensation: You state your preferred rate or salary (varies globally).
- Benefits:
- Book and conference budget.
- Ability to use modern tools and AI in your day-to-day work.
- Hiring process (fast):
- Email us your CV and link to items you have worked on. Github or deployed.
- One Phone call.
- Decision made within 1 week.
- One month paid trial.
Why Join
You’ll be working one-on-one with the founder on a product that already has strong adoption and a clear path to growth. You’ll own meaningful pieces of the UI, influence product direction, and work in a low-bureaucracy, high-autonomy environment.
If you like building tools that other engineers, quants and analysts love to use, this is a great fit.
